Classroom visit: Observation notes 4/04/16
Teacher: Kirsten Laurence
Essential Learning Area: Recount Story Writing
Observation Notes:
Read the story, “Who’s been eating my porridge” to the class. Lovely modelling of expression and told the children before the reading that they were going to be either a girl or boy bear in the story. The children were all totally engaged.
Good to see you using the correct words for the language features ie onomatopoeia. The children love getting their tongues around the words.
Discussed the WALT for the lesson-sequencing our ideas.
Did a brain storm on the board together- Who were the characters, this gave the children the vocabulary that they needed for filling in their own graphic organiser.
What are some of the things that happened in the story
All the children’s suggestions were valued – I like the “precious porridge”
Then moved onto a Hamburger graphic organiser. Worked on one as a class that was in the modelling book.
Had a hamburger sheet to read from which showed which the different part of the recount needed.
Points to Discuss/ Next steps:
Break up your time on the mat with different activities. Eg listen to the story, then think, pair share the sequence of the story. Come back to the mat, and discuss the graphic organiser, then go and fill in one individually or in pairs. Etc this just stops the long Teacher talk and children just sitting passively.
Combine the two lots of brainstorming together, straight onto the hamburger template.
Differentiate the task, so that the faster workers can get on while you scaffold the task further for the children who need it.
You are a reflective practitioner, and are prepared to ask for advice and listen to what more experienced teachers have to say. Well done on a successful lesson.
